The world spends hundreds of billions annually on research and scholarship. In some shining examples, such as the human genome, the downstream value is many times more - in jobs, improved quality of life [1], new technology and new materials. However this is very rare and in most cases research remains largely hidden and unused because of social and technical barriers. I argue that there are many billions of  of dollars in the existing literature and that we can extract some of them using a mixture of semantics and community - social machines.
