The evolution of signaling systems, proto-language, and language is a topic of enormous contemporary research interest, ranging from pheromones to bee dances to gestures to human speech. The overall study of the evolution of communication, however, is parceled out by species. This division of labor inhibits investigation into evolutionary transitions—that is, into the path-dependent emergence of novelty.
