Andrew AbbottSenior Fellow
Abbott's major research interests lie in the sociology of occupations, professions, and work, the sociology of culture and knowledge, and social theory. His current theoretical focus is the study of action, meaning, and emotion. Abbott also has longstanding interests in methods, heuristics, and the philosophy and practice of sociology.
Abbott's major current writing project is a book of general social theory setting for a processual ontology of the social world. He is also undertaking numerous empirical projects aimed at working out the details of that theory - on occupational therapy, on career mobility, on intellectual disciplines. He is also working on a large project on the professions and capitalism.
